After the United States formally began sending troops to Vietnam in 1965, many Americans became increasingly frustrated with the war. The United States did not see the early successes they thought they would, and as a result, decided to institute a draft in 1969 to increase the number of soldiers available to fight in Vietnam. Many Americans opposed the war and the draft, but they had different ways of resisting the U.S. war effort in Vietnam.

Instructional Snapshot
Class begins with the teacher dividing students into small groups and distributing the graphic organizer to each student and a source set to each group. Students carefully analyze each of the six images of activism during the Vietnam War, recording a hypothesis of how the image would have impacted contemporary viewers. If needed, the teacher prompts students to consider how Americans felt about wars that occurred before the Vietnam War.
Students then deliberate together to rank the images from the most to the least persuasive in shaping American opposition to the Vietnam War. The teacher then facilitates a class discussion where students share how and why they ranked their images. As the discussion continues, students are confronted with a claim (“Most Americans supported the Vietnam War because they believed the war was justified.”) that cannot be corroborated by the featured sources. In response, students construct an accurate counterclaim that can be supported by evidence from the source set

COLLABORATE: Hypothesize the ways the images may have impacted Americans’ feelings about the Vietnam War.
