Solar, Wind, Hydropower, and Geothermal energy all provide cleaner alternatives to energy produced by coal, fossil fuels, and natural gas. However, the infrastructure to produce and use these cleaner energies is still growing. In this inquiry students will investigate the compelling question, “How do we ensure our energy is clean?”

Standards
D2.Geo.8.9-12. Evaluate the impact of economic activities and political decisions on spatial patterns within and among urban, suburban, and rural regions.
Instructional Snapshot
Class begins with students working in small groups to identify the goals of the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, and record the goals in the graphic organizer.
Students then assess the EERE goals by comparing them to energy use data and evaluating the progress made since 2000. Students record whether or not the goal is being met and how they know using specific evidence from the data tables in their graphic organizer.
Finally, students will update the EERE goals to reflect the evidence from the data and the progress made since 2000. Students write the new goals in the graphic organizer.
Formative Tasks
COLLABORATE: Understand: Identify the goals of the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE).
DELIBERATE: Assess: Compare EERE goals to energy use data and note areas of alignment and conflict.
PRODUCE: Act: Update the EERE goals, taking into account their progress since 2000.
