The American annexation of Hawaii had the potential to end thousands of years of rich Hawaiian language and culture. Without efforts by native Hawaiians to save Hawaii’s identity, it could have easily been lost. In this inquiry, students will weigh which of the efforts to preserve Hawaiian identity was most impactful.

About the inquiry
Compelling Question
How did Hawaiians save their identity?
Standards
C3 Framework: D2.Geo.6.9-12. Evaluate the impact of human settlement activities on the environmental and cultural characteristics of specific places and regions.
Instructional Snapshot
Class begins by brainstorming the possible impacts of U.S. imperialism on Hawaii. Before students dive into the sources, the teacher should read, or have one student read, the disclaimer (Source A) from the source set to remind students that much of Hawaii’s culture was lost due to American imperialist policies. Students then work through the chunked blog examples in groups to identify specific examples of efforts made to preserve Hawaiian identity in some way. After reading, students should compare the examples they found.
Next, students deliberate by ranking the examples they found from most impactful to least impactful for preserving Hawaiian identity.
Finally, students design a historical marker with text on the example they found most impactful for the preservation of Hawaiian identity. To keep with Hawaiian Historical Foundation standards, the text must be 150 words. Students could use the template to create one online or design one on paper.
