About the inquiry

Progressive Era advocates worked across decades and encompassed a wide range of social, political, and economic issues as they pushed for reform. Many of these efforts aimed to reshape government policy. Working through organizations, campaigns, protests, and advocacy, reformers challenged existing conditions and successfully influenced new laws and government policies. This inquiry helps students explore how collective action can influence the government and create lasting change.

Compelling Question

What makes collective action powerful?

Standards

D2.His.14.9-12. Analyze multiple and complex causes and effects of events in the past.

Instructional Snapshot

Class begins with students sorting a series of images into two categories: actions taken by Progressive era reformers and the policies that resulted from that work. Students can jot their thoughts on an organizer as they sort.

Students then focus on the “actions” category and work together to list as many types of collective action taken as they can identify in the sources in the middle column of the organizer (e.g., establishing political parties, publishing persuasive cartoons, circulating a platform of issues, organizing conferences and rallies).

Finally, students will select one Progressive Era topic addressed by the sources and make connections between the actions taken and policies established by creating a flowchart. Students will develop a claim to support the compelling question as their caption.

Formative Tasks

COLLABORATE: Sort sources into categories with Progressive era actions on one side and policy-based effects on the other.
DELIBERATE: Determine how many different types of collective action are exemplified by the sources.
PRODUCE: Choose one topic from the sources and create a flowchart that illustrates the connection between collective action and policy creation. Caption the flowchart with a claim responding to the compelling question.
