About the inquiry

Appalachia has often been a place that is misunderstood by those outside of the region. The region has a culture, physical environment, and community that is one of a kind compared to others. The many aspects of Appalachia all contribute to its overall definition. Students will be introduced to ginseng and ramps, Appalachian music, and communities in the mountains coming together in times of great need. They will get a glimpse of the region and its people, and determine what defines Appalachia.

Compelling Question

Instructional Snapshot

Class begins with the teacher asking students, in a whole group setting, to define geography and determine key aspects of the definition. Students then conduct a quick Think-Pair-Share, after which the teacher creates a class definition of geography for students to refer back to during the activity –3 minutes. Students are then assigned to groups (1-3) and given a specific source based on their group number to annotate using an annotation guide –6 minutes. Students are then called back together as a whole, where the teacher will facilitate the discussion, where each group reads their annotations and answers to the DBQs to the class –4 minutes. Finally, students individually select an argument stem from an AI-generated list that identifies the geographic aspect that most defines Appalachia, comparing it to a defining geographic aspect of their own hometown.

Formative Tasks

DELIBERATE: Discuss, in assigned groups, the student annotations and questions about Appalachian geography.

PRODUCE: Select from a list of AI-generated argument stems and provide evidence to justify which geographic aspect most defines Appalachia. Compare this to the most defining geographic aspect of students’ hometown.
