Appalachia has often been a place that is misunderstood by those outside of the region. The region has a culture, physical environment, and community that is one of a kind compared to others. The many aspects of Appalachia all contribute to its overall definition. Students will be introduced to ginseng and ramps, Appalachian music, and communities in the mountains coming together in times of great need. They will get a glimpse of the region and its people, and determine what defines Appalachia.

Standards
Instructional Snapshot
Class begins with a brief introduction to the Appalachian region–identifying where it is located on the map, what states are included in the region, and the Appalachian mountain range–2 minutes. Students are then divided into pairs to annotate the excerpt using an annotation guide. The annotation guide provides a scaffold to help students learn the skill of annotating a text–4 minutes. Students are then called back together, and each pair shares their annotations with the class. Once all pairs have shared their annotations students discuss questions about ginseng and ramps. Through this discussion, students determine what ginseng and ramps are and why they are foraged by the people of Appalachia–5 minutes. Students remain with their partners and are then given a mind map to complete about ginseng, ramps, and their characteristics. Through the excerpt, annotations, and discussions, students are finally asked through their mind map to explain how foraging for ginseng and ramps define Appalachia–10 minutes.
