AI as an intellectual companion

I’ve been thinking about the ways that AI can serve as an intellectual companion.

ChatGPT https://openai.com/chatgpt/

I want to suggest that there are two ways to think about ChatGPT.

First, think of ChatGPT as an assistant that thinks like you and can off-load tasks that would otherwise take precious time away from you that could otherwise be spent doing other things for your students and for yourself. Think lesson planning, grading, organizing tasks, keeping track of data and information you need to do your job.

That’s intriguing (at least for me) and I’de like to say more about this – maybe soon. But, more intriguing (again, to me 🙂 is a second way of thinking about ChatGPT

   — AI as a thinking companion —

Most of us think through engagement with others. Afterall, why do we even need to think if it’s not to sort through some idea, situation, problem, opportunity that’s shared with others. I suppose, at some times, humans have cloistered themselves away from other humans and had experiences that counted for something to that cloistered person. But, my guess is that’s rare, and I would go so far as to say that we can’t even know about those experiences unless the person that had them decides to share with others, … which is the interaction they were avoiding in the first place, so it sort of voids the whole notion of a cloistered thought.

Anyway, what does that have to do with AI and Chat GPT?  Well, I would like to say that ChatGPT could be an intellectual companion. A partner who’s down with engaging on your terms – no judgment, but also not passive or just a yes to your queries and thoughts.

I’ve tried this out a few times. Here one on AI as an intellectual companion.
